The Last Class [2012-03-15]

[Graphic Design and Art]
Today is the last day of the lecture. Next week Tuesday will be our Final Project Review day. In this last class the topic that we were talking about is the difference between "Graphic Design" and "Art". I defiantly having more knowledge about what Graphic Design is through out this 10 week course. Before I enter the the class, I always though graphic design is only about stunning image, trying to create an Image with visual Impact.even though "Art" is what I originally intended to learn and to have career on. But now I realized I am in the right major. I am a person who enjoy solving problems (problems other than math..) and that is what Graphic Design is all about.

What if !?[2012-03-08]

[In Today's class we played a game "What if........"]
"What if" is basically why our world is today. "what if" is the core of everything. people start from a wild idea  and brings that thought into real life. what if we people can go to the moon? so we created spaceship and landed on the moon. what if we can have a car running without gasoline? we have created electric car. what if we have a display monitor that is like a paper? which we are developing right now, and should be available in near future. In this graphic design/visual communication even with two people have the same "what if" they will have different solution to it. because people think differently. What if is critical for great thinker.

"What if" is like a "Hope"
Hapless: Unfortunate.
Halting: Slow and hesitant, lack of confidence, faltering.
Illustrious: Well known, respected, and admired for past achievements.

Think before you Talk [2012-03-06]

What I learned today is "Think before you Talk". Today the whole class is separated into two group, and Jimmy, our professor, ask us to figure out the next figure/number/shape could be.[example below] what I find is funny is, people can come out with the theory, and trying to convinced everyone to use it just because it is easy to explain to the other group. The worse part is when we try to end up with a conclusion, it does not make any sense. Because so much little ideas fragment try to get together in the limited time, and it make the idea so much more complicated. There are time we should just let our ideas out, but there certainty times that "Thinks before you Talk". In this case, what we need is a complete thought from one person and everyone agrees it, and not try to combine bunch different idea and make it work.

A list of what we learned [2012-2-28]

[Each Assignment Mean Something]

Today, we have create a list of keywords that related to what we have covered so far. each keywords will trigger a memory of what we have done. This class makes me realized that everything that we did in the class mean something. and it is not just about being a better designer but a lot of them are training to become a better person. Jimmy, our professor, he sees being class on time is critical. so for whoever gets late for the class we have a -0.5 point deduction from our grade of 25, and there is no limited to it. so basically if I am late for the class 10 time, it means I didn't do my final project. because he understand in the real world out there, being late on a presentation, is very unprofessional and might/will lose your client. the other assignment is apple drawing, we have to draw the apple that was given the second day of the class, and use different method to create the image. This assignment is a training of exploration, observation, and a little bit drawing skill. This assignment means a lot to me. For the pass almost 20 years I have only use pencil and paper to create my drawing. I am afraid to try new things, but if I don't try, I will never become someone great. The more you know, the better you become. Blog writing, help us to build up our writing skill and expression. communication is everything is graphic design.

Visual Literacy: ability to read the picture and understand the meaning behind it.

This is a WHAT? _ This is a "WHAT" [2012-02-21]

Hello there, its me again talking about my class experience with my professor Jimmy moss. a week ago as a class we  have attend a guess speaker event in our campus, Cal state LA, with Kali Nikitas. Jimmy wanted us to share what we learn from her in the beginning of the class. So we sit in a big cycle and have Jimmy sit in the middle. I always likes how our professors will switch things around, so we don't get bored easily. so first half of the class period is talking about the event. To be honest I didn't enjoy discussion because there is just repeating what we did in the speech. an example is talking an exercise that we did in speech, taking three envelope and note cards, and writing our expectation in the future about three matters, Global, Professional, and Personal. so lot of repeat in first half discussion. on the second half of the class, there comes the fun part. Jimmy ask us to play a "Game", involving giving two object and one is named "What" and one is named "Who". and we sit in a cycle, from one person pass the object and telling the next person this is a "what" and the next person will reply as this is a "What?" and the person who hand-over the object will ask the pervious person and ask them this is a "What?" and going back to the first person who first start this game will answer this is a "What". This game is really complicated to be explain in language, even Jimmy have to demonstrate how this is done for us to understand how this game works. so we spend rest of the class playing this game. It is not as bad as only having the "What" but using both "What" and "Who" become really difficult, especially when they both meets. at first, I think this game is not fun at all, but as I get more involve with the game, I become more serious about this game. but what is the point of the game, I still don't get it. The best description I can think of maybe the "Cooperative game". That goes the whole class for today.

Don't get late again... [02-16-2012]

[Presentation day]
Today is my turn to do my presentation on my games.

[ I get very nervous in front of people.]
My experience of presenting in front of class become very different after I took a speech class on Mt.SAC.  The best speech that I ever did in that class, it was a speech that the professor will give you a topic, and in next 5 minute you will be going up and present. and what I did was just simply go up and tell a story with a little sense of hummer. It feels like a regular talk with other people, but it certainly works for me.

[My Presentation]
I am much more nervous than I thought when I stand in front of the crow. before I went up, I have all my speech organized and knowing what I am going to say. but when I go up there, I still know what I am going to say, just the "order" is going everywhere. So I am just trying to say what I needed to say, and basically tell people how I came up with this concept. it all because I don't see Chess being realistic. and Pawn didn't always  have to be a nobody.

[My concept]

Higher Class: King, Queen
[They are pretty much useless, other than they inherent all the wealth from their ancestor]
They have everything, but their lack of ability made them replaceable.

Middle Class: Castle, Knight, Bishop
[who really maintain the society]
middle class they have better ability, has better chance to become successful [New King]

Lower Class: Pawn
[who made everything possible]
Lower class, less chance to become successful, but if they become a middle class[eats one] they have the equal or even better chance to become the higher class.[New king]

Presentation [02-14-2012]

[Presentation day-1]
Today we starting to take turn to do presentations on our games. The whole class is doing a critic, but we are making common on how other present the game and not the actual game concept. as we going along the way Jimmy gives us some tip on how we should present our concept.

  • we should show confident and not play around with our hand. also we should stand still, and not leaning left and right.
  • It's presenter's responsibility of making sure everyone can see our project. and they are paying attention.
  • when audience are crossing their hand, yawning, looking everywhere. than the presenter should switch up, to get back their attention.
When I present, I should be looking carefully on these little details to become a better presenter.

Game Review [02-09-2012]

[Review]

Today, we spend all the class period on review on game concept in the class [only the people who complete all 9 gets review] which my games did not place on the review. I don't exactly remember which game are more interesting to me. but after the review I defiantly gain some new idea from other's game. [subconsciously]

Even though i have my 6 game concept ready but I did not like any of the game that I created, maybe it is still a concept that needs more development. or maybe it's just not a good starting point. one that I really thinks is a great Idea is, Chinese Chess vs. International Chess. but it's been done 5 years ago. I am now having trouble to make my game for the presentation.

[Thinking]

During the review  when someone present an idea of different way to play chess, but the concept is unclear. Jimmy said we have many different ways of playing poker card, and we can make different way of playing chess.

I realized to Create a totally unique game is very difficult, especially something brilliant in this short among of time. So I decided to change my focus on how to create a new way of playing "chess" or "connect 5" <-- I played around 3-4thousand games.

Game Time ! [02-07-2010]

[Game]
In the beginning of today's class, we play "games".
this is our assignment last week, to bring game on Tuesday to play. we spend the first two hour playing games, different games with different person. First I played Chess [a fun game, but in the end I lost]. the second game that I played is monopoly, an educational game of capitalism. for some reason I get so <passionate> or <serious> when playing those two games. even though it's only a game but it will <engage> people.

[Creating a Game]
Our "HomePlay" is trying to create 9 game concept

It's all making sense for Me [02-02-2012]

[I need to work on my story telling]

In the beginning of the class, we post up the "mapping" homework that we did for the last class on the wall. than we go around to see everyone's work. there is saw one that has a very clean drawing. it's like a comic that deliver clear message of how to get an "A" also gives a sense of hummer which at the end the Character[student] kick off the boss[possible final project] and stand on top of the letter "A". This is something I am missing,

[Communication]

[Sir Ken Robinson]

Jimmy shows us a video from you tube, it is a lecture by Sir Ken Robinson. he is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources. he talks about, how the education system is killing the creative mind out of everyone. The education system right now is trying to unify everyone, and forces them to learn the same way. but the truth is people are at their best when learning things that they love the most. also different people learns differently, some are better in small group, large group, some might be better along.

One of the idea he talks about is divergent thinking. it is different from creativity but is is a essentially element of creativity. As we get more education, we are much more limited to our knowledge. life seems to be only one possible answer to everything that around us, but that is not true at all.

[this should be why a lot of creative people are seem crazy, because they are able to break out of the system]

Mapping [01-31-2012]

Today's class starts from a word "mapping" on the board.

Jimmy than ask the class "what is mapping" some other students starting to build on the idea of geographical map, or chart. but for me the first thing I think of "mapping" is brainstorming and developing. there are many more possibility of a mapping can be. later we are giving an assignment "Mapping of how to get an "A" in this class" on a 9 x 12 paper. The interesting thing is ,there is no instruction on how to do it. only instruction is to be communicate visually. the whole class is been left in the class for about an hour to work on this assignment.

This assignment later become a homework, for us to spend more time to develop.

In this class, everything seems to have only given little instruction on how to do a specific thing, so each of us can create different possible solution to a same question.

Brain Dead [01-26-12]

[Concept, Craftsmanship, Characters are equality important ]

At the beginning of the class, our professor brings out some magazines [cmyk] featuring students artworks. A lot of them has wonderful ideas and powerful images. I felt refreshing after looking at the images. but later during the discussion of "words/phrase that gives different meaning to the image" I felt completely brain dead, I don't have much to say to each image. I think part of the reason is because the language, and another is because I don't use them constantly. I realized that is my weakness, which is using language. I am too heavily focus on the image, and ignores the words. and I am also aware that I did not include the [adjectives] in my post. I really need to start build some vocab.

[The more you know the more is limited]

"Raise Your Hand If You're Not Here" [01-24-2012]

The title does not reflect what happen in the class, but I will raise my hand if I can. [I'm not There]

[Katsuya Terada]
Japanese illustrator and cartoonist.
This guy had the greatest impact in my life as an artist. but for some reason I have stop looking at other's art for a long time. I guess writing this blog is a chance for me to bring back what's been lost from me.

here are some image that I find online.
also there is one great blog post about his exhibition "Terra's Black Marker"

Comic [01-19-2012]

Today's class is about sharing our homework "My Life as a Graphic Novel : How I Made it to College". Than we have to ranked them from the best to the worse without a scoring guild. So everyone will pick from what they think is best either from quality of the drawing, how well the story is put together, or how much effort they put in. and because people are more concern from one thing to the other, it is really hard to have a ranking that everyone all agree on, so for the first 20 minute there is really no progress. later we decided to vote, by taking rounds of voting to decide the ranking. at the end I am not really happy with the outcome, since I believe most of the people is voting on how well the story is and the effort they put in, but for me all that I care is the quality of the drawing.

Powerful image [01-17-2012]

During the class period, Jimmy shared some Great Image and explain their possible meaning.

Vacuous: Having or showing a lack of thought or intelligence; mindless; empty
Unruly: Disorderly and disruptive and not amenable to discipline or control
Uppity: Self-important; arrogant.

Powerful image [Obama Hope]

The background color is off white, means he is not our ordinary president.the blue, red white as representation of our country. the logo, is created from the same letter "O" from the hope, the logo also  has the meaning of sunrise. lastly as Obama looking upward giving us a sense of optimistic.

New Logo [Jack in the box]

Couple years ago, Jack in the box has redesign their logo. I never felt anything special about it, until Jimmy put together these two things together.

Vacuous - Having or showing a lack of thought or intelligence; mindless; empty

Same Blog, Same Class, Different Year

This is an Old blog, and things happens that I have to skip the last class.

Jet lag makes it perfect.
I just came back from Taiwan for my brother's wedding, last Sunday at 8PM, and next day I already have classes and work waiting for me.
I am never a morning person, I always sleep around 1 and wake up at 8 or 9
but now I have to wake up at 6ish and out the door by 7 to make it to the class.
this is when the Jet lag helps me. now I always sleep at 11 and wake up at 6. sound pretty nice for my classes.

Today's class [1/12/12]
On my notes there are Two Key points.

One is about Parking Garage in downtown LA are in need for designer to organized, because of the poorly directional signs and poor over all looking, that are scaring away their customers. new renovation is needed for the garage owner to get themselves back to business. big money is over there await for us.

Second is about Jimmy's Life: Follow your Heart
My Professor Jimmy is talking about his life, how originally he had a nice paying job in the design industry, but find himself losing the passion of art. So he quit his job and working as a teacher. which earns him not even half of his old job. but now he has much more energy and work much harder as before. Follow your heart and do the right things, step up to new challenges in life.
when can I ever do that?

Zonked: Exhausted; Tired out.
Yielding: Giving way under pressure; not hard or rigid.
Wacky: Funny or amusing in a slightly odd or peculiar way.

Today's Notes:
