This is a WHAT? _ This is a "WHAT" [2012-02-21]

Hello there, its me again talking about my class experience with my professor Jimmy moss. a week ago as a class we  have attend a guess speaker event in our campus, Cal state LA, with Kali Nikitas. Jimmy wanted us to share what we learn from her in the beginning of the class. So we sit in a big cycle and have Jimmy sit in the middle. I always likes how our professors will switch things around, so we don't get bored easily. so first half of the class period is talking about the event. To be honest I didn't enjoy discussion because there is just repeating what we did in the speech. an example is talking an exercise that we did in speech, taking three envelope and note cards, and writing our expectation in the future about three matters, Global, Professional, and Personal. so lot of repeat in first half discussion. on the second half of the class, there comes the fun part. Jimmy ask us to play a "Game", involving giving two object and one is named "What" and one is named "Who". and we sit in a cycle, from one person pass the object and telling the next person this is a "what" and the next person will reply as this is a "What?" and the person who hand-over the object will ask the pervious person and ask them this is a "What?" and going back to the first person who first start this game will answer this is a "What". This game is really complicated to be explain in language, even Jimmy have to demonstrate how this is done for us to understand how this game works. so we spend rest of the class playing this game. It is not as bad as only having the "What" but using both "What" and "Who" become really difficult, especially when they both meets. at first, I think this game is not fun at all, but as I get more involve with the game, I become more serious about this game. but what is the point of the game, I still don't get it. The best description I can think of maybe the "Cooperative game". That goes the whole class for today.

Don't get late again... [02-16-2012]

[Presentation day]
Today is my turn to do my presentation on my games.

[ I get very nervous in front of people.]
My experience of presenting in front of class become very different after I took a speech class on Mt.SAC.  The best speech that I ever did in that class, it was a speech that the professor will give you a topic, and in next 5 minute you will be going up and present. and what I did was just simply go up and tell a story with a little sense of hummer. It feels like a regular talk with other people, but it certainly works for me.

[My Presentation]
I am much more nervous than I thought when I stand in front of the crow. before I went up, I have all my speech organized and knowing what I am going to say. but when I go up there, I still know what I am going to say, just the "order" is going everywhere. So I am just trying to say what I needed to say, and basically tell people how I came up with this concept. it all because I don't see Chess being realistic. and Pawn didn't always  have to be a nobody.

[My concept]

Higher Class: King, Queen
[They are pretty much useless, other than they inherent all the wealth from their ancestor]
They have everything, but their lack of ability made them replaceable.

Middle Class: Castle, Knight, Bishop
[who really maintain the society]
middle class they have better ability, has better chance to become successful [New King]

Lower Class: Pawn
[who made everything possible]
Lower class, less chance to become successful, but if they become a middle class[eats one] they have the equal or even better chance to become the higher class.[New king]

Presentation [02-14-2012]

[Presentation day-1]
Today we starting to take turn to do presentations on our games. The whole class is doing a critic, but we are making common on how other present the game and not the actual game concept. as we going along the way Jimmy gives us some tip on how we should present our concept.

  • we should show confident and not play around with our hand. also we should stand still, and not leaning left and right.
  • It's presenter's responsibility of making sure everyone can see our project. and they are paying attention.
  • when audience are crossing their hand, yawning, looking everywhere. than the presenter should switch up, to get back their attention.
When I present, I should be looking carefully on these little details to become a better presenter.

Game Review [02-09-2012]

[Review]

Today, we spend all the class period on review on game concept in the class [only the people who complete all 9 gets review] which my games did not place on the review. I don't exactly remember which game are more interesting to me. but after the review I defiantly gain some new idea from other's game. [subconsciously]

Even though i have my 6 game concept ready but I did not like any of the game that I created, maybe it is still a concept that needs more development. or maybe it's just not a good starting point. one that I really thinks is a great Idea is, Chinese Chess vs. International Chess. but it's been done 5 years ago. I am now having trouble to make my game for the presentation.

[Thinking]

During the review  when someone present an idea of different way to play chess, but the concept is unclear. Jimmy said we have many different ways of playing poker card, and we can make different way of playing chess.

I realized to Create a totally unique game is very difficult, especially something brilliant in this short among of time. So I decided to change my focus on how to create a new way of playing "chess" or "connect 5" <-- I played around 3-4thousand games.

Game Time ! [02-07-2010]

[Game]
In the beginning of today's class, we play "games".
this is our assignment last week, to bring game on Tuesday to play. we spend the first two hour playing games, different games with different person. First I played Chess [a fun game, but in the end I lost]. the second game that I played is monopoly, an educational game of capitalism. for some reason I get so <passionate> or <serious> when playing those two games. even though it's only a game but it will <engage> people.

[Creating a Game]
Our "HomePlay" is trying to create 9 game concept

It's all making sense for Me [02-02-2012]

[I need to work on my story telling]

In the beginning of the class, we post up the "mapping" homework that we did for the last class on the wall. than we go around to see everyone's work. there is saw one that has a very clean drawing. it's like a comic that deliver clear message of how to get an "A" also gives a sense of hummer which at the end the Character[student] kick off the boss[possible final project] and stand on top of the letter "A". This is something I am missing,

[Communication]

[Sir Ken Robinson]

Jimmy shows us a video from you tube, it is a lecture by Sir Ken Robinson. he is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources. he talks about, how the education system is killing the creative mind out of everyone. The education system right now is trying to unify everyone, and forces them to learn the same way. but the truth is people are at their best when learning things that they love the most. also different people learns differently, some are better in small group, large group, some might be better along.

One of the idea he talks about is divergent thinking. it is different from creativity but is is a essentially element of creativity. As we get more education, we are much more limited to our knowledge. life seems to be only one possible answer to everything that around us, but that is not true at all.

[this should be why a lot of creative people are seem crazy, because they are able to break out of the system]

Mapping [01-31-2012]

Today's class starts from a word "mapping" on the board.

Jimmy than ask the class "what is mapping" some other students starting to build on the idea of geographical map, or chart. but for me the first thing I think of "mapping" is brainstorming and developing. there are many more possibility of a mapping can be. later we are giving an assignment "Mapping of how to get an "A" in this class" on a 9 x 12 paper. The interesting thing is ,there is no instruction on how to do it. only instruction is to be communicate visually. the whole class is been left in the class for about an hour to work on this assignment.

This assignment later become a homework, for us to spend more time to develop.

In this class, everything seems to have only given little instruction on how to do a specific thing, so each of us can create different possible solution to a same question.
